State Senator Ralph Davenport, R-Spartanburg, maintains that in spite of his mistake in claiming 23 million dollars in savings in the plan to consolidate Spartanburg County School districts, he is still moving forward with legislation to reduce the county's districts from 7 to 4.
Davenport maintains that Spartanburg County could still save from 5 to 8 million dollars in the consolidation, and that if he gets his way the plan will be implemented by July of this year.
Many sources within the state hotly dispute Davenport's claims, however. Administrative costs skyrocket when school districts are consolidated. Greenville County is a case in point. The consolidated district actually spends more tax dollars than when the county had several smaller districts.
This fact is not lost on Steve Parker, organizer of the group, SOLVE--Save Our Local Voice in Education. Parker's group is vehemently contesting and opposing any move to reduce the number of school districts in Spartanburg County, claiming that smaller districts save money and encourage more personal contact with administrators and parents.
